A raging 5,500-acre wildfire in Salt Lake City last month burned everything in its path — except for Phoenix, a baby golden eagle discovered in the ashes.

Kent Keller, an avian enthusiast and volunteer for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, had put a band on the eaglet on June 1 and returned to the nest on the June 28 in search of the tracking device. He found the bird just feet from its decimated nest, his feathers almost entirely melted (right) and his talons badly burned (left).
